Kevin Pena, Special Projects Director/Senior Labor Consultan

Kevin Peña’s journey into the labor movement was deeply rooted in his family’s history of union activism. His mother had been a dedicated union steward in SEIU, and Kevin had grown up immersed in the traditions of attending pickets and union meetings. He initially joined the labor movement with the intention of helping Latino Spanish-speaking workers like his mother, hoping to be a catalyst for change. However, as he became directly involved and employed by these unions, his perspective shifted.

Reflecting on his initial motivation, Kevin shared, “I was deeply immersed in the union way of life. Nevertheless, my personal experience within the labor movement proved to be a great disappointment.” Instead of feeling like a force for positive change, Kevin often felt more like a salesman. He witnessed labor unions using tactics of manipulation, deceit, and indoctrination on workers. It became evident to him that labor unions primarily sought workers for their membership dues and blind support of the union’s political agenda.

Kevin continued to work for Service Employees International Union (SEIU), representing workers in various industries and actively engaging in organizing initiatives, election processes, negotiations, and grievances procedures. His dedication extended to assisting workers with federal mediation and arbitration procedures.

However, Kevin eventually made the decision to leave the labor movement. This pivotal moment led him to redirect his efforts towards promoting constructive employee relations across diverse industries. He firmly believes in fostering an environment of trust, cooperation, and open communication between employers and workers that leads to positive employee relations.

Kevin was also responsible for representing workers as a union representative in various industries. His involvement in labor matters spans different sectors, including representing a significant portion of Spanish-speaking industrial workers across various industries.

Kevins union experience in organizing and representing Spanish-speaking workers from multiple countries and communities has enriched him in a deep understanding of the unique differences within each community which is vital to effectively communicate with these workers.
